Guidance for the prescribing of unlicensed eye preparations has been issued by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO) and the UK Ophthalmic Pharmacy Group, following data showing that over 30,000 prescriptions were dispensed in England and Wales at a cost of almost £3m in the first nine months of 2013.
Unlicensed eye preparations should only be prescribed in situations where a licensed product will not provide for a patient’s needs, says Lucy Titcomb, UK OPG representative to the RCO. The guidance, available on the RCO and UK OPG websites, will be reviewed six-monthly to ensure the information is up to date.
